Axed F1 star given LIFELINE as new seat announced in official statement
Former Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen has secured a new opportunity in motorsport after being dropped from the F1 grid.
The 32-year-old Dane will join BMW M Motorsport’s hypercar program for the 2025 season, driving the BMW M Hybrid V8 in the IMSA Championship and the World Endurance Championship.
This marks a fresh chapter for Magnussen following a decade-long F1 career.
Magnussen made his Formula 1 debut in 2014, earning a podium in his first race.
Despite stints away from the grid in 2015 and 2021, he returned to Haas, where he secured a pole position in 2022.
However, with no F1 teams offering a seat for 2025, Magnussen’s time in the series will conclude after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
His departure comes amid significant changes in the F1 driver lineup for 2025.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton’s surprise move to Ferrari earlier this year triggered a reshuffle, with Mercedes bringing in 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli.
Meanwhile, Jack Doohan, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Oliver Bearman will also make their full-time F1 debuts with Alpine, Sauber, and Haas, respectively.
Bearman, who replaces Magnussen at Haas, impressed during his appearances in 2024.
Magnussen expressed gratitude and excitement about his new role. “I am happy and proud to represent such an iconic motorsport brand as BMW,” he said. “After ten years in Formula 1, I am embarking on a new and exciting chapter.
I can hardly wait to start preparations and look forward to the 2025 season.”
BMW M Motorsport welcomed Magnussen to its team, highlighting his experience and skills as assets for its endurance racing program.
The partnership marks a promising new venture for the veteran driver in one of motorsport’s most prestigious categories.
