Dan Ashworth’s ‘role’ in… Man United exit revealed after… shake-up

Steve McClaren’s exit from Manchester United was influenced by a restructuring of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff. McClaren, now the manager of Jamaica’s national team, did not join United’s pre-season tour in the USA but stayed in Manchester to work with returning players from Euro 2024 and the Copa America. His departure was facilitated by Dan Ashworth, who recently joined from Newcastle.

McClaren, who served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at United from 1999 to 2001, expressed excitement about his new role in Jamaica. He highlighted his previous work with the Jamaican team and their potential for growth. Jamaica’s football president, Michael Ricketts, welcomed McClaren’s appointment, aiming for the 2026 World Cup.

McClaren will continue his duties at Carrington until United’s return from the USA. He thanked Manchester United for their support and contributions during his tenure. Ten Hag also praised McClaren for his service and support, emphasizing their long-standing friendship.

McClaren’s departure follows that of Ten Hag’s assistants, Mitchell van der Gaag and Benni McCarthy, who were replaced by Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rene Hake, and Andreas Georgson. United also unveiled their new home kit for the 2024/25 season with new sponsors.
