The Las Vegas Grand Prix made a return to the Formula 1 calendar for the second year in a row in 2024, aiming to deliver a high-energy race through the heart of the city’s famous strip. Set as one of the most anticipated events of the season, the Las Vegas GP marks the third U.S. stop on the F1 calendar, following races in Miami and Austin. Last year, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took victory in the inaugural Las Vegas race, strengthening his dominance. This year, Verstappen has the chance to secure a fourth consecutive world championship if he manages to claim the win once again.
However, while the excitement surrounding the first Las Vegas GP last year was palpable, the event wasn’t without its issues. The opening practice session faced significant challenges as a result of problems with the track infrastructure, particularly the drain covers along the circuit. Just eight minutes into the first practice session (FP1), Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was driving at high speed—over 200 mph—when his car struck a loose drain cover on the track. The impact was severe, with the manhole cover dislodging completely and causing substantial damage to Sainz’s Ferrari. The situation forced a red flag on FP1, halting the session prematurely.
With the track now seen as potentially unsafe, race organizers had to inspect and repair not only the drain cover that caused the initial problem but also the other utility lids around the circuit. This inspection and repair process took considerable time, ultimately resulting in FP1 being called off entirely. The issue further impacted the schedule, as preparations for the second practice session (FP2) were also delayed, leading to logistical complications and frustration among fans and teams alike.
The organizers initially hoped to restart FP2 on time, but the session was ultimately postponed by two and a half hours. When the cars finally returned to the track at around 2:30 a.m., the grandstands were almost entirely empty, with fans having been forced to leave earlier due to curfews and safety concerns. F1 and event organizers cited multiple factors in the decision to clear the stands, though a 1:30 a.m. curfew was one of the primary drivers behind this action. For the fans who had purchased tickets and arrived expecting an uninterrupted race experience, the situation was disappointing. Reports indicated that some fans were upset and reluctant to leave, leading to some tensions, and in certain cases, police were involved to ensure spectators complied with the enforced curfew.
Many fans felt the disruption unfairly disrupted their experience, and some voiced their frustrations with how the situation was handled, especially given the high costs of tickets and the inconvenience of attending an event late into the night. The whole ordeal left the organizers with lessons to learn, especially as they faced criticism for the disrupted fan experience and the inadequacies in their planning and execution of the event.
Following the race weekend, event organizers took note of the problems that arose and were determined to prevent a repeat of the chaotic start to last year’s Las Vegas GP. They have since implemented significant changes to ensure the track is safe for drivers and that similar disruptions will not occur this time around. Lori Nelson-Kraft, the senior vice president of corporate affairs for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, confirmed that race organizers had undertaken a comprehensive review and reinforcement process for all utility lids and manhole covers along the circuit. According to Nelson-Kraft, “All the utility lids along the circuit have really undergone a rigorous process to secure them. So that got a very hard look.” With these measures in place, organizers are confident that this year’s event will proceed smoothly, avoiding the significant delays and disruptions that frustrated fans and impacted the 2023 race weekend.
The Las Vegas GP’s return comes with high expectations, and given the costly tickets and the immense hype surrounding this glamorous F1 event, organizers are under pressure to deliver a flawless experience. The organizers’ acknowledgment of past errors and proactive steps to strengthen the infrastructure reflects an understanding of the importance of safety and smooth operations for fans and teams alike.
This year’s race promises an unforgettable experience in one of the world’s most iconic cities, and with the added security measures, fans and teams can hope for a safer and more thrilling weekend of racing action without the infrastructural setbacks that dampened last year’s excitement. With a hopeful track record and Verstappen vying for yet another title, the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix is poised to deliver on its promise of spectacle and excitement, capturing the spirit of both F1 and Las Vegas.
