Ex-F1 Mechanic Marc Priestley Compares Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes Struggles to Ricciardo’s Difficult McLaren Stint
As Lewis Hamilton approaches the end of his final season with Mercedes, former F1 mechanic Marc Priestley has drawn parallels between Hamilton’s recent struggles and Daniel Ricciardo’s difficult time at McLaren. Despite Hamilton securing two major wins this season, Priestley questioned the sudden downturn in the seven-time champion’s overall performance.
Reflecting on the situation, Priestley shared his thoughts on his YouTube channel, noting that experienced drivers like Hamilton, Ricciardo, and Sergio Perez haven’t “suddenly become bad drivers.” He suggested that issues in the car’s design, particularly the new generation of F1 chassis, may be contributing to these drivers’ challenges.
According to Priestley, the modern F1 cars have become highly specialized, with characteristics that may not suit the ingrained driving styles of seasoned drivers. He speculated that Hamilton’s difficulties at Mercedes, much like Ricciardo’s challenges at McLaren, may be due to these cars’ unique demands, which differ from the cars older drivers built their careers around.
“The modern generation of cars are so specific, they’re so nuanced, it’s not suiting the driving style that they’re so used to, that’s ingrained within them,” Priestley explained. His remarks suggest that Hamilton, like Ricciardo, may be contending with a car that doesn’t align well with his established driving approach, raising questions about how seasoned drivers adapt to these evolving F1 designs.
