Ex-F1 Star Says Alonso’s Bahrain GP Struggles Were ‘Tough to Watch”
Fernando Alonso’s underwhelming performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix has been described as “tough to watch” by former Formula 1 driver Pedro de la Rosa.
The Aston Martin veteran had a rough weekend in Sakhir, finishing 15th in the race after being knocked out in Q2 during qualifying. It marked the fourth race in a row without a single point for the two-time world champion, who has had a disappointing start to his 2025 season.
De la Rosa, now an Aston Martin ambassador and longtime supporter of Alonso, shared his candid thoughts on the situation.
“It was hard to watch both drivers [Alonso and Lance Stroll] struggling like that and dropping so many places,” he told DAZN, via Mundo Deportivo. “But this is just the reality. It wasn’t a badly executed race. The team followed the right strategy and made the most of what they had the issue is the car’s actual performance.”
Despite the poor result, De la Rosa praised Alonso’s driving, saying he managed to out qualify the car’s capabilities.
“Fernando managed to qualify better than the car deserved. But on a track like this, where overtaking is possible, the race results reflect the car’s true potential,” he added.
Looking ahead to the next race in Saudi Arabia, De la Rosa is hopeful that the faster nature of the Jeddah circuit could help mask some of the car’s weaknesses.
“The car performs poorly in slower corners, which is our main weakness right now. Luckily, Jeddah has fewer of those, but we can’t use that as an excuse. We still need to improve.”
Alonso remains one of only four drivers without points so far in 2025, and with Stroll contributing just 10 points, Aston Martin’s chances of improving on last season’s fifth-place finish in the constructors’ standings look slim. The team appears to be setting its sights on 2026, when major regulation changes and Adrian Newey’s technical influence could offer a fresh start.
