F1 2024 Qatar Grand Prix starting grid with penalties applied

The starting grid for the 2024 Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix has been finalized following Saturday’s qualifying session at the Lusail International Circuit, with penalties reshuffling key positions.

Initially, Max Verstappen appeared to have secured his first pole position since the Austrian GP, but a late one-place grid penalty pushed him down to P2.

This handed George Russell of Mercedes the pole position, setting up an exciting battle at the front.

Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, moved up to P3 and will aim to challenge Russell for the lead at the start.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who endured a challenging sprint race on Saturday, managed to reach Q3 and will begin the race in P9, just ahead of Kevin Magnussen in the Haas.

McLaren gained momentum over Ferrari in the constructors’ championship heading into Sunday’s race.

McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Norris qualified in P4 and P3, respectively, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz secured P5 and P7, trailing their McLaren rivals.

Further down the grid, Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin claimed P8, while Lewis Hamilton, Russell’s teammate, will start from P6.

The Alpine duo had mixed results, with Pierre Gasly taking P11 and Esteban Ocon starting last after a tough session.

Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas, representing the rebranded Kick Sauber team, took P12 and P13.

Yuki Tsunoda and rookie Liam Lawson of VCARB Racing occupied P14 and P17, respectively, with Williams’ Franco Colapinto starting 19th.

The final grid positions reflect a blend of penalties and performance, promising an intense race under the lights.

Verstappen’s penalty may add an extra layer of drama as he seeks to reclaim the top spot.

McLaren’s strong showing positions them well in their rivalry with Ferrari, while Russell’s pole could boost Mercedes’ chances for victory.
