A major revelation has emerged from Flavio Briatore, Alpine’s Executive Advisor, regarding the pursuit of Adrian Newey, the renowned Formula 1 designer, ahead of his move to Aston Martin in 2025. Newey’s decision to leave Red Bull in 2024 caused ripples throughout the paddock, sparking widespread speculation about his next career move. Initially, many expected Newey to join Ferrari, potentially alongside seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. However, those reports gradually faded, and it was eventually confirmed that Newey would join Aston Martin as their Managing Technical Partner in March 2025.
During the intense period of speculation over Newey’s future, several F1 teams were rumored to be vying for his expertise, with Mercedes even believed to be a contender. However, Briatore has now revealed a bombshell about Alpine’s interest in the legendary designer. In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, Briatore disclosed that Alpine never had any serious discussions with Newey about joining the team. Despite rumors circulating that Alpine was also in the running, Briatore clarified that the team was not yet ready for a figure of Newey’s stature.
Briatore explained that while Alpine certainly admired Newey’s genius, they recognized that to fully benefit from his talents, the team would need to be in the right position both technically and organizationally. “Adrian is an artist,” Briatore said, underscoring the need for the right environment for Newey to work in. He further elaborated that Alpine was not yet equipped to harness Newey’s abilities, adding, “To benefit from him, you have to have the right team around him.” He suggested that Alpine could potentially revisit the idea of bringing Newey on board in the future, possibly in two or three years, when the team is better prepared to make the most of his expertise.
This insight from Briatore marks a significant revelation in the ongoing saga of Newey’s next steps in F1. While the designer’s imminent move to Aston Martin appears to be set, Briatore’s comments hint at Alpine’s future aspirations to work with such a technical mastermind. For now, however, Alpine seems content to focus on building a team that could one day be ready to attract someone of Newey’s caliber.
