Ferrari to Probe Hamilton’s Struggles After Disappointing Spanish Grand Prix

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has confirmed the team will investigate Lewis Hamilton’s underwhelming performance at the Spanish Grand Prix, after the seven-time world champion described his weekend as “terrible.”

Despite qualifying ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc on Saturday, Hamilton failed to match the Monegasque driver’s pace during the race. By lap 10, team orders saw Hamilton yield position to Leclerc, and his struggles continued throughout the race. He ultimately finished sixth, having been overtaken by Nico Hulkenberg during a safety car restart, while Leclerc secured a podium finish.

Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, Vasseur acknowledged Ferrari’s recent strong form but admitted Hamilton’s showing in Barcelona raised some red flags.

“I’m generally satisfied, but it was a chaotic race,” Vasseur said. “There are still questions about tyre performance—ironically, they improved late in the race. But with solid results in Imola, Monaco, and now Barcelona, we’re right in the fight for second in the constructors’ standings.

“Lewis was performing decently until the final stint. Then there was a clear drop in pace—we need to find out why. Something didn’t go as expected in that last phase.”

Hamilton himself was unable to identify the issue, saying the car’s balance felt worse than at any other point in the season. The sudden decline has sparked speculation, with former teammate Nico Rosberg suggesting Hamilton’s age could be contributing to his recent inconsistency.

Vasseur later implied that an issue with Hamilton’s car may have emerged before the safety car period, though he withheld specific details. Ferrari will use the upcoming race break to analyze the situation, as Hamilton now sits 23 points behind Leclerc in the drivers’ standings.
