Lewis Hamilton has reportedly requested further modifications to Ferrari’s new SF-25 following its initial shakedown at the Fiorano test track earlier this week. These adjustments are anticipated to be implemented before the commencement of pre-season testing in Bahrain next Wednesday, February 26.

After unveiling their 2025 Formula 1 contender immediately after the season-launch event in London on Tuesday, Ferrari returned to Italy the following morning to conduct a filming day with the SF-25 at Fiorano. Charles Leclerc took the wheel during the morning session, completing approximately 30 laps before handing over to his new teammate, Hamilton, for the afternoon stint.

This session marked Hamilton’s return to Fiorano, the site of his first test as a Ferrari driver with the team’s 2023 car on January 22. Unofficial reports from the test suggest that Hamilton’s fastest lap was about 0.8 seconds slower than Leclerc’s. However, it’s important to note that the two drivers were reportedly following different testing programs. Leclerc, now in his seventh full season with Ferrari, was able to push the car to its limits from the outset. In contrast, Hamilton focused on building confidence and adapting to the team’s systems and procedures after an 11-year tenure with Mercedes.

The SF-25 is an evolution of last year’s model, featuring significant changes, including a switch from push-rod to pull-rod front suspension. This modification aims to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and overall performance. Loic Serra, Ferrari’s chassis technical director, emphasized the extensive development that has gone into the new car, stating, “We have worked hard, changing 99 percent of the car, evolving its architecture to maximize performance.”

Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, has expressed enthusiasm about his new challenge with Ferrari. He described the experience as revitalizing, noting, “I knew that I needed something new, I knew I needed this new challenge… we’re literally walking around with such a big smile on my face every day I come to work.”

The Briton has been immersing himself in the Ferrari culture, even moving his mobile home next to the house of the late team founder, Enzo Ferrari, at Fiorano. He has also been learning Italian and adhering to a vegan diet, fully embracing his new environment. Team principal Fred Vasseur has noted the positive relationship between Hamilton and Leclerc, stating, “We are starting in very good shape now. The most important thing is to keep this relationship, to continue to work as a team and to push as … .”

The anticipation surrounding Hamilton’s debut with Ferrari has been palpable among fans. During the Fiorano shakedown, a dedicated supporter went to great lengths to catch a glimpse of Hamilton in action. The fan climbed a tree obstructing the view and used an electric saw to remove its top, an act that drew both amusement and criticism online. Local authorities have since identified the individual and are expected to impose a fine for the incident.

As Ferrari aims to secure its first championship title since 2008, the collaboration between Hamilton and Leclerc is seen as a formidable pairing. Hamilton has acknowledged the challenge of competing alongside Leclerc, stating, “It’s not going to be easy to beat him, especially in his home, but we’ll work together to ensure the team moves in the right direction.”

With pre-season testing set to begin in Bahrain next week, Ferrari is poised to evaluate the effectiveness of the SF-25’s developments and the dynamic between its star drivers. The team’s performance during these sessions will offer valuable insights into their prospects for the upcoming season.

Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari represents a significant chapter in his illustrious career. Having achieved unparalleled success with Mercedes, his move to the Scuderia underscores his desire for new challenges and his ambition to further cement his legacy in Formula 1. As the season approaches, all eyes will be on how this partnership unfolds and whether it can return Ferrari to the pinnacle of motorsport.

In summary, the initial shakedown of the SF-25 has provided both drivers with essential insights into the car’s performance and areas for improvement. Hamilton’s feedback and the subsequent adjustments will be crucial as Ferrari prepares for the rigorous demands of the upcoming season. The collaboration between Hamilton and Leclerc, combined with the team’s technical advancements, positions Ferrari as a strong contender in the quest for championship glory.
