The FIA has confirmed its decision regarding penalties for incidents during the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, received a five-second time penalty for his aggressive move against Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc during the opening moments of the race. Verstappen forced Leclerc off track while battling for the lead in Turn 1. Although he maintained the lead initially, the stewards reviewed the incident and deemed the move too forceful, awarding him both a time penalty and two points on his super license.
The penalty temporarily cost Verstappen his lead, as he had to serve it during his first pit stop, dropping him to 11th. Despite this setback, Verstappen’s strategy and pace allowed him to recover and secure victory, marking his 18th win of the season. Reflecting on the penalty, Verstappen admitted the decision was fair, though he initially expressed frustration over team radio.
George Russell of Mercedes also faced penalties for causing a collision with Verstappen later in the race. He was handed a five-second time penalty and two super license points, which significantly impacted his race, dropping him from a likely podium position to eighth. Russell acknowledged his responsibility for the incident and expressed regret over the missed opportunity.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix showcased fierce competition between top teams, including Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Ferrari’s Leclerc finished second, while Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez completed the podium after an intense battle with his teammate.
