The FIA has confirmed that Max Verstappen will face a double penalty following a controversial collision with George Russell during the closing laps of the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix.
The incident, which occurred at Turn 5, saw Verstappen make contact with Russell’s Mercedes after being instructed by his Red Bull team to relinquish the position. As a result, Verstappen received a 10-second time penalty and three penalty points on his Super Licence, bringing his total to 11—just one point shy of an automatic race ban.
The stewards deemed Verstappen fully at fault for the collision, stating that his actions were “undoubtedly” the cause of the incident. The penalties dropped him from fifth to tenth place in the final race classification.
Verstappen later acknowledged his mistake, admitting that his frustration led to a move that “was not right and shouldn’t have happened.” However, the incident has sparked widespread criticism, with former world champion Nico Rosberg calling for Verstappen’s disqualification and George Russell describing the maneuver as deliberate and dangerous.
With the Canadian Grand Prix on June 15 and the Austrian Grand Prix on June 29 approaching, Verstappen must avoid any further infractions to prevent a potential race ban that could see him miss the British Grand Prix on July 6.
In a separate incident, Haas driver Oliver Bearman was also penalized with a 10-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during a battle with Liam Lawson. Bearman finished 17th, last of the remaining runners at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
