FIA Confirms Monaco Grand Prix Disqualification Penalty Under New Tyre Rule

In a bold move aimed at reinvigorating one of Formula 1’s most iconic but often predictable races, the FIA has confirmed the introduction of a mandatory two-pit stop rule for the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix and has warned that any failure to comply will result in automatic disqualification.

This significant update, now formalized in Article 30.5 m) of the F1 Sporting Regulations, was approved by the World Motor Sport Council and is set to dramatically alter race strategies on the notoriously tight streets of Monte Carlo.

Traditionally, Monaco has been a race defined by track position and tyre preservation, with many teams opting for single-stop strategies due to minimal tyre wear. However, the new regulation mandates that all drivers make two compulsory pit stops, a measure designed to break up the processional nature of the race and open the door to more overtaking and unpredictable outcomes.

“This change is about creating more dynamic racing in Monaco, where overtaking is famously difficult,” an FIA spokesperson said. “We want to make sure fans get the spectacle they deserve — and that teams are challenged to adapt their strategies accordingly.”

The FIA has also made it clear that non-compliance will not be tolerated. Any driver failing to make both required pit stops will face immediate disqualification, regardless of their finishing position.

The rule is expected to shake up the competitive order, potentially giving midfield teams a better shot at strong results and adding a new layer of intrigue to F1’s most glamorous weekend.

As the countdown begins to the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, teams are already recalibrating their strategies to prepare for what could be one of the most unpredictable editions in recent memory.
