FIA Confirms Monaco Grand Prix Disqualification Rule Over Tyre Regulations
The FIA has officially confirmed a major overhaul to the Sporting Regulations for the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, introducing a mandatory two-stop rule designed to add strategic complexity and reinvigorate the famously processional race.
In an amendment to Article 30.5 m) of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, all 20 drivers must now complete two mandatory pit stops during the race. Failure to do so—without a valid reason—will result in disqualification, a penalty aimed at enforcing strict compliance and encouraging more varied race strategies.
This revision, approved by the World Motor Sport Council, targets one of F1’s most prestigious but criticized events. The Monaco GP has long faced scrutiny for limited overtaking and predictable outcomes, largely due to the circuit’s narrow and twisty layout.
The updated rule also addresses exceptional race scenarios. Should the race be suspended and not resumed, drivers who fail to run at least two different dry tyre compounds or use a minimum of three sets of any tyre type will be hit with a 30-second time penalty. A further 30 seconds will be added for any driver finishing the race on a single set of tyres.
These measures are part of a broader push by the FIA and Formula 1 to increase competitiveness and fan engagement. The 2025 Monaco GP weekend has already seen its share of drama, with multiple drivers expressing frustration over traffic during practice. A notable incident involved hometown hero Charles Leclerc, who collided with Lance Stroll after being blocked on a flying lap.
Despite ongoing challenges, Monaco remains a cornerstone of the F1 calendar. A new six-year contract ensures the Grand Prix will continue until at least 2031. Organizers and fans alike are hopeful that the revised tyre rules will breathe new life into the storied event.
As the sport evolves to meet modern expectations, this regulation change may prove pivotal in preserving the glamour and prestige of Monaco while delivering the excitement fans crave.
