FIA Upholds Penalty After Tsunoda-Gasly Collision at Monaco Grand Prix
The FIA has officially ruled on the incident involving Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly during the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix. The collision, which occurred early in the race, sparked discussion due to its influence on both drivers’ momentum.
The clash happened at the notoriously tight Nouvelle Chicane — a key overtaking spot in Monaco. As the two fought for position, Gasly attempted a late dive to pass Tsunoda. However, the move backfired, with Gasly’s front wing making contact with the rear of Tsunoda’s car. Both drivers were forced slightly off-line, disrupting their pace, though Tsunoda managed to continue without major damage.
Race stewards quickly launched an investigation, analyzing footage and telemetry. Their findings concluded that Gasly was predominantly at fault, labeling his move as overly aggressive and ill-timed given the track’s constraints.
Consequently, Gasly received a time penalty that impacted his final standing, along with a penalty point on his Super Licence. Drivers who accumulate 12 points within 12 months face an automatic one-race suspension, making each point crucial.
Tsunoda voiced his disappointment after the race, saying, “It was a risky move. I don’t think there was really a gap. Unfortunate, but we move on.”
Gasly accepted the decision, acknowledging, “It was a tight moment. I saw an opening, but it didn’t come off. I respect the stewards’ call.”
The decision underscores the FIA’s commitment to enforcing consistent driving standards, especially on unforgiving circuits like Monaco. Both drivers now turn their focus to the remainder of the season, aiming to avoid further penalties and regain momentum.
