Max Verstappen Hit with Major Penalty After George Russell Collision, Could Face Further Action

Max Verstappen’s outing at the Spanish Grand Prix has taken a controversial turn after he was handed a significant penalty for a clash with Mercedes driver George Russell — and he may not be out of trouble yet.

The Red Bull star received a 10-second time penalty for an incident that occurred shortly after a safety car restart at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The stewards ruled that Verstappen was at fault for forcing Russell off the track, labeling the contact as “avoidable.” As a result, the Dutchman was demoted from fifth to tenth place in the final classification, costing him valuable championship points.

Adding to the controversy, Verstappen and Russell were involved in a second, more serious collision just one lap later, which remains under investigation. The FIA is reviewing onboard footage and team communications, with possible charges of reckless driving being considered.

If found guilty, Verstappen could face additional penalties, including further time deductions, a grid drop at the next race, or even penalty points on his super licence — all of which could impact his championship campaign.

The incidents have sparked heated discussions across the paddock. While Mercedes boss Toto Wolff criticized Verstappen’s actions as “unacceptable,” Red Bull defended their driver, calling it “hard but fair racing.”

The FIA is expected to announce its final decision in the coming days.
