These drivers have been penalized for making modifications to their cars under the restrictive parc ferme conditions, and they will now be required to start the sprint race from the pit lane. However, due to the changes, the rules require both cars to begin the sprint from the pit lane, under Article 40.9 of the 2024 Formula One Sporting Regulations. As for Zhou Guanyu, the suspension setup of his car was adjusted without receiving official approval from the FIA technical delegate. Consequently, Zhou must also start from the pit lane under the same article.
The penalties mean that Stroll, Alonso, and Zhou will face additional hurdles if they hope to salvage points from this weekend’s sprint. Starting from the pit lane puts them at an immediate disadvantage, as they will miss out on the grid positions they earned during qualifying, forcing them to fight their way up through the pack.
