The FIA has issued a post-race penalty to McLaren driver Lando Norris following an embarrassing and avoidable collision during the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix. The incident occurred on Lap 27 of the race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, when Norris misjudged a braking point and made contact with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli while battling for fifth place.
The collision forced Antonelli off-track and damaged Norris’s front wing, prompting an unscheduled pit stop for repairs. Although both drivers were able to continue the race, the stewards launched an investigation into the incident, ultimately finding Norris at fault for causing a collision.
In an official statement, the FIA said:
“The driver of Car 4 [Lando Norris] was deemed wholly responsible for the incident. He failed to brake in a controlled manner and caused contact with Car 77 [Kimi Antonelli], affecting the outcome of the race for both drivers.”
As a result, Norris received a five-second time penalty and two penalty points on his super licence. The time penalty dropped him from 6th to 8th in the final classification, costing McLaren valuable Constructors’ Championship points.
Norris admitted fault after the race, saying, “It was my mistake. I misjudged the gap and locked up slightly. I’ve apologized to Kimi and the team. It’s not how I wanted the race to go.”
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella described the incident as “unfortunate but uncharacteristic,” emphasizing that the team would analyze the situation internally.
The penalty has reignited debate over aggressive driving and accountability on track, especially during crucial points in the season. With the championship battle tightening, every point is becoming increasingly critical.
