The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has provided an official explanation for the disqualification of Carlos Sainz Sr. and Sébastien Loeb from the 2025 Dakar Rally. The governing body emphasized that both drivers were removed from the competition due to safety concerns, specifically because of roll cage damage sustained in separate incidents.
Carlos Sainz Sr. Disqualified After Stage Two Crash
Carlos Sainz Sr., one of the most accomplished figures in rallying, had entered the 2025 Dakar Rally with high expectations, following his triumph in 2024. His victory last year marked his fourth Dakar title, further solidifying his legacy in motorsport. At 62 years old, Sainz has enjoyed an illustrious career, winning two World Rally Championship (WRC) titles and setting multiple records, including becoming the oldest driver to win the Dakar Rally in 2023.
Ahead of this year’s event, Sainz also made headlines for participating in a farewell drive with Ferrari’s Formula 1 team. The event was particularly symbolic as it took place before he was officially replaced by seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season.
However, his campaign in the 2025 Dakar Rally was cut short early in the race. During stage two, Sainz’s Ford Raptor suffered a serious rollover accident, causing significant structural damage to his vehicle. Despite managing to finish the stage, FIA officials determined that his car’s roll cage had been compromised, leading to his immediate disqualification. The roll cage is one of the most critical safety features in rally racing, designed to protect drivers in the event of high-speed crashes. Once damaged, it cannot ensure the same level of protection, making it unsafe for continued participation.
Sébastien Loeb Also Forced to Withdraw Due to Safety Concerns
Sébastien Loeb, a nine-time WRC champion and another motorsport legend, faced a similar fate in stage three of the Dakar Rally. After being involved in an accident, Loeb’s vehicle also sustained substantial damage to its roll cage. As per FIA regulations, once an accident occurs, the vehicle must be inspected before any repairs are made. If officials determine that the roll cage is compromised, the car is deemed unsafe and cannot continue the competition.
Loeb’s exit was a major blow for both him and his team, as he was considered a strong contender for victory. His extensive experience in rallying and cross-country events had made him one of the top favorites in the 2025 edition of the race. However, safety regulations take precedence over competitive ambitions, and the FIA enforced its rules without exception.
FIA Justifies Decision to Disqualify Both Drivers
Following the disqualifications, the FIA’s Cross-Country Director, Jerome Rousel, issued an official statement to clarify the governing body’s stance. He emphasized that safety regulations regarding roll cage integrity are strict and non-negotiable.
“As soon as a car experiences an accident, it must be inspected by event commissaries before any repairs are made,” Rousel explained. “If the roll cage is found to be damaged, the vehicle cannot continue.”
He went on to stress the crucial role the roll cage plays in protecting drivers from potentially life-threatening injuries. It is specifically designed to maintain the vehicle’s structural integrity during crashes, and any damage to it could severely compromise driver safety. While roll cages can technically be repaired, doing so requires precise equipment and ideal working conditions—both of which are difficult to achieve in the extreme and remote environments of the Dakar Rally.

The disqualifications of two of the biggest names in rally racing sent shockwaves through the Dakar Rally, as both Sainz and Loeb were leading figures in the competition. Their exits highlighted the unforgiving nature of the event, where even the most experienced drivers are not immune to its challenges.
While fans and teams may have been disappointed by the decision, the FIA’s commitment to upholding safety standards remains firm. The Dakar Rally is widely regarded as one of the toughest motorsport events in the world, and ensuring driver safety is a top priority. Any compromise on safety regulations could lead to severe consequences, and the FIA’s decision serves as a reminder that even legendary drivers are subject to the same stringent rules as everyone else.
