Mercedes is preparing for life after Lewis Hamilton, with Guenther Steiner convinced that young prospect Kimi Antonelli is set to replace the seven-time world champion.
Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari at the end of the season has left Mercedes in need of a new driver to partner with George Russell, who is expected to become the team’s leader.
Antonelli, currently competing in Formula 2, has been closely associated with Mercedes throughout his junior career.
His recent success in the F2 standings, including wins at Silverstone and Budapest, has bolstered speculation that he could be Toto Wolff’s choice to fill Hamilton’s seat.
Guenther Steiner, the former Haas team boss, believes that Toto Wolff’s approach to the decision indicates that Mercedes may have already made up their mind.
Steiner shared that Wolff mentioned taking his time to decide on Hamilton’s replacement during an interview, which he interprets as a sign that Wolff is confident in his choice.
Steiner suggested that apart from Antonelli, only Carlos Sainz or Valtteri Bottas would be realistic options for Mercedes, but he doesn’t see anyone else being a strong contender.
Wolff has also hinted at Antonelli’s potential role within the team, stating earlier in the season that Mercedes is looking to “reinvent” themselves and that Antonelli is part of their future plans.
Carlos Sainz, who has been linked to the Mercedes seat due to Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, has instead opted to join Williams despite earlier speculation that he might sign with Audi.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, has also been mentioned as a possible candidate for Mercedes, especially with rumors of internal issues at Red Bull. However, Verstappen’s move to Mercedes remains speculative.
As Mercedes contemplates its next steps, Antonelli’s strong performances and established connection with the team make him a leading candidate to step into Hamilton’s shoes, signaling a new era for the Silver Arrows.
