Teen Sensation Triumphs in Shanghai as Hamilton Delivers Ferrari’s Best Result in Thrilling Chinese Grand Prix

The 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix delivered a spectacular mix of drama, breakthrough performances, and unexpected twists as teenage star Kimi Antonelli stormed to a historic victory for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. The young Italian produced a commanding drive at the Shanghai International Circuit, becoming only the second teenager in Formula 1 history to win a race. His triumph also secured Mercedes their second one-two finish of the season, with teammate George Russell completing the dominant result.

Antonelli looked in control for most of the race, pulling away from the field with impressive composure that belied his age. However, the closing stages delivered a heart-stopping moment that briefly threatened to undo his remarkable performance. With just three laps remaining, the young driver locked up heavily heading into the penultimate corner and ran far off the racing line. For a moment it seemed disaster might strike, but Antonelli managed to keep the car under control, rejoined the track quickly, and continued without losing the lead. Fortunately for him, the comfortable gap he had built over Russell was more than enough to absorb the mistake, allowing him to cross the finish line and celebrate a stunning maiden Formula 1 victory.

Behind the Mercedes duo, Lewis Hamilton delivered one of his most determined performances since joining Scuderia Ferrari. The seven-time world champion fought fiercely throughout the race and ultimately secured third place, marking his first podium finish in 26 Grand Prix starts for the legendary Italian outfit. It was also Ferrari’s strongest result since Hamilton’s high-profile switch to the team.

Hamilton’s race was far from straightforward. Much of the afternoon was defined by a tense and aggressive on-track duel with his teammate Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari pair battled wheel-to-wheel for several laps, refusing to yield as they fought for position. Their fight was intense but controlled, providing some of the race’s most exciting moments for fans. Eventually, Hamilton managed to hold onto the advantage and secure the final podium position ahead of Leclerc, who finished fourth.

The race weekend had already been filled with chaos before the cars even began the formation lap. For the second consecutive Grand Prix, unexpected technical issues caused major disruption on the grid. Both cars from McLaren failed to start the race, leaving fans stunned as the reigning champion Lando Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri remained stranded in the garage when the green flag waved. Electrical problems struck both cars late, preventing them from taking part in the race entirely.

McLaren were not the only team affected before the start. Alex Albon and Gabriel Bortoleto also failed to make it onto the grid, bringing the total number of non-starters to four and reducing the field significantly before the race had even begun.

Once the race finally settled into rhythm, more drama soon followed. Lance Stroll was forced to retire after just nine laps due to what appeared to be a battery failure on his Aston Martin F1 Team car. His stoppage triggered a safety car period that immediately shook up race strategies across the grid. Several drivers rushed into the pits to switch tyres, while others who had started on the harder compound decided to stay out, creating a mix of strategies that reshaped the running order.

Following the restart, both Ferrari drivers surged ahead of Russell’s Mercedes and temporarily controlled the fight for the podium positions. Their internal battle continued while Russell sat behind them, waiting patiently for an opportunity. Once the Mercedes driver found his rhythm, he eventually fought his way past the red cars and began chasing down his teammate Antonelli. However, the time lost behind the Ferraris proved too costly, and Russell could not close the gap enough to challenge for the victory.

Further down the order, reigning multiple-time champion Max Verstappen endured a frustrating afternoon. The Red Bull Racing star suffered a suspected power-unit failure with just ten laps remaining. His car slowed dramatically as he limped around the circuit before eventually returning to the pits and retiring from the race.

More trouble struck Aston Martin later in the race. Veteran driver Fernando Alonso was forced to pull into the pits shortly after the halfway mark after severe vibrations made the car nearly undriveable. His retirement meant the team once again failed to bring a car to the finish line this season.

When the chequered flag finally fell in Shanghai, Antonelli stood proudly on the top step of the podium, having delivered one of the most memorable performances of the young Formula 1 season. Russell followed him home to secure Mercedes’ one-two finish, while Hamilton’s fighting third place marked a major milestone in his Ferrari journey.

Meanwhile, reigning world champion Lando Norris — who captured his first Formula 1 drivers’ title last season — watched from the sidelines after his car’s pre-race failure. With the championship battle only just beginning, the dramatic Chinese Grand Prix has already set the stage for an intense and unpredictable season ahead.
