Formula 1 is always evolving, with teams constantly searching for advancements in safety features and aerodynamic and mechanical components.

A recent proposal by the FIA involves introducing air conditioning to the cockpit of F1 cars, a suggestion met with firm opposition from Lewis Hamilton.

The idea arose following the challenging conditions of the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, which saw extremely hot and humid weather.

Several drivers faced severe difficulties: Logan Sargeant had to withdraw from the race due to illness, Esteban Ocon vomited in his helmet, and Lance Stroll felt on the verge of passing out.

These incidents prompted the FIA to consider measures to mitigate such harsh conditions for drivers.

A cooling device has been developed and will be tested at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix. However, Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, strongly rejects this proposal.

Speaking in Hungary, he emphasized that air conditioning is unnecessary in F1.

He stated, “This is Formula 1. It’s always been like this. It’s tough in these conditions. And we’re highly-paid athletes.

You’ve got to train your ass off to make sure you can withstand the heat, ultimately.

It’s tough. It’s not easy, especially when you go to places like Qatar and Singapore. But I don’t think we need an AC unit in the car.”

The upcoming 2024 Qatar Grand Prix, now scheduled for December, is not expected to face the same extreme weather conditions as the previous year.

The 2023 event took place two months earlier when temperatures were higher.

The rescheduled date aims to avoid the peak heat, forming part of a triple-header that concludes the F1 season.
