Josh Giddey Gets Emotional After Loss To Serbia At 2024 Olympics

Josh Giddey struggled to contain his emotions after Australia’s narrow 95-90 overtime loss to Serbia in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. In an interview with Channel 9, Giddey expressed his heartbreak over the defeat.

“We were so close,” Giddey said. “We had so many chances. With the talent on this team, you believe you have the ability to go all the way and we believed that with this group.

“We put ourselves in a great position to win that game and to come up short like that in overtime, it’s heartbreaking,” Giddey continued.

“It kills me that I have to wait four more years for another chance at this, but man, I’m so proud of this group. I love this team.

Our coaches, our fans, deserved a lot better than this.”

This was Giddey’s first Olympic appearance, and he was asked what he’d learned from the experience.

“Man, that every possession matters and it can go so quick,” Giddey stated. “We play four games and that’s it.

You’ve got to wait four years… I don’t really know how to sum it up now.

It’s so raw and soon after the game. But you know, I just love this team.

“I believed we had the group to go all the way,” Giddey added. “… We’ve got to wait another four years and this feeling sucks and it’s going to hurt but it’s going to build us and we’ll be back in L.A.”

The loss was particularly tough given how close the Boomers were to making the semifinals for the third consecutive Olympic games.

They had built a 24-point lead in the first half against Serbia, only for the Eagles, led by Nikola Jokic, to mount a historic comeback.

The final blow came when Giddey turned the ball over with less than 30 seconds remaining in overtime, sealing Australia’s fate.

Turnovers were a significant issue for Giddey in the game, as he committed seven of them.

Despite this, the new Chicago Bulls guard had a notable performance with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, shooting 11-20 from the field and 3-5 from beyond the arc.

It was a solid outing but ultimately not enough to secure the win.

While Giddey will have future opportunities to win an Olympic medal, he’ll have to wait four more years.

The likes of Patty Mills, who scored 26 points against Serbia, are unlikely to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, leaving Giddey with the responsibility to lead the Boomers.

For now, Giddey will shift his focus to starting strong with his new NBA team, the Chicago Bulls.

Traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder for Alex Caruso, Giddey is expected to take on a larger role and put up significant numbers, although wins might be hard to come by.
