Leclerc Avoids FIA Disqualification After Post-Race Inspection

Ferrari Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc narrowly avoided a major setback as the FIA confirmed that his car passed all post-race inspections following the Spanish Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver had been randomly selected for a series of stringent technical checks, a routine measure applied to one of the top 10 finishers after each race to ensure compliance with the sport’s technical regulations.

Leclerc, who claimed an impressive third-place finish in Spain, faced the possibility of disqualification if his car had failed any of the tests. This scrutiny was especially concerning for Ferrari, as the team had already suffered a significant blow earlier in the season when both Leclerc and teammate Lewis Hamilton were disqualified from the Chinese Grand Prix. On that occasion, Leclerc’s car was found to be 1kg under the minimum weight limit of 800kg, while Hamilton’s car had excessive wear on the wooden plank beneath, exceeding the legal limit by 0.5mm.

Had Leclerc been disqualified in Spain, the loss would have been even more damaging for Ferrari’s campaign, considering he had secured a podium position. His third-place finish contributed valuable points to Ferrari’s standings, playing a crucial role in the team’s rise to second in the constructors’ championship — surpassing both Mercedes and Red Bull. So far in the 2025 season, Leclerc has secured three podiums, proving instrumental in Ferrari’s strong form alongside seven-time world champion Hamilton.

One area of concern during the inspection related to Article 11.1.2 of the FIA’s technical regulations. This rule mandates that the braking system must apply equal and opposing forces on each side of a brake disc. It prohibits any mechanism that could generate asymmetrical braking torque on a given axle. A breach of this regulation would have led to an immediate disqualification.

Fortunately for Leclerc and the Ferrari team, all checks confirmed that his car adhered to the technical standards set out by the FIA. No irregularities were found in the braking system or any other inspected components, allowing his Spanish Grand Prix result to stand without issue.

In addition to the technical review, the FIA has also taken steps to address a concerning rise in abusive messages directed toward drivers, teams, and officials. Although specific details have not been released, the governing body reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy regarding online abuse and confirmed it would be taking action to ensure all participants in the sport are treated with respect.

With the Canadian Grand Prix approaching, Leclerc and Ferrari can now focus fully on the race weekend, relieved to have avoided another damaging penalty as they continue their push for championship success in 2025.
