LAS VEGAS – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen celebrated his fourth consecutive Formula 1 world championship title under the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip. The milestone came during an eventful Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 23, 2024, where Mercedes achieved a one-two finish led by George Russell, with Lewis Hamilton in second place.
Although Verstappen finished the race in fifth position, it was enough to mathematically secure the championship, solidifying his dominance in the sport. The Dutchman’s main rival, McLaren’s Lando Norris, finished sixth. Even a strategic late pit stop for fresh tires to claim the fastest lap bonus point couldn’t close the 63-point gap, leaving the title decisively out of reach with two races remaining in the season.
Verstappen reflected on his achievement over team radio, saying, “What a season. Four times. Thank you, guys. Thank you to everyone.” He acknowledged the challenges of the year, adding, “It was a little bit more difficult than last year, but we pulled through and gave it our all.”
Norris was gracious in defeat, offering his congratulations. “As much as it hurts a little, saying congrats doesn’t hurt,” he admitted. “Max drove an incredible season. Whether he had the fastest car or not, he was always there, making my life tough. We tried to challenge him, but he simply had a better season overall.”
Mercedes Dominates the Desert
The Las Vegas Grand Prix wasn’t just about Verstappen’s triumph. Mercedes delivered a stellar performance, with George Russell leading from pole position to take a commanding victory. He held off Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who made a strong start from fourth to move into second. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton surged through the field, charging from 10th on the grid to claim second place, completing a Mercedes one-two.
Speaking after his win, Russell expressed joy at the result and the team’s efforts. “I was planning on flying out a few hours after the race, but I’m definitely not getting on that flight. I’ll be celebrating with the team tonight,” he said.
The chilly desert night added drama to the race, but Verstappen’s historic championship win and Mercedes’ triumph stole the spotlight, setting the stage for a thrilling close to the 2024 season.
