Zak Brown confirms exploratory conversation amid contract negotiations with McLaren drivers
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has revealed that he held talks with Max Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, during the Formula 1 off-season between 2024 and 2025. The discussions took place despite McLaren’s recent decision to secure long-term contract extensions for current drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
In an interview with *De Telegraaf*, Brown explained that the outreach was part of his responsibility to stay informed about the driver market, especially while negotiating with Piastri at the time.
“Oh yes, about that call… It’s my job to monitor the market and understand what’s happening,” Brown said. “You never know when a domino effect might begin. If something changes elsewhere, it could lead to renewed interest in my drivers, so it’s important to be prepared.”
Though the talks didn’t progress, Brown hinted they ended quickly once the financial demands for the reigning world champion became clear. Verstappen had previously acknowledged the conversation, joking that the discussion was brief after his manager disclosed the potential cost.
“Let me put it this way,” Brown added. “That phone call gave me all the information I needed.”
McLaren’s interest in Verstappen came as the team surged in performance. Piastri’s victory in Miami marked his third straight Grand Prix win, contributing to a dominant 1-2 finish alongside Norris and extending McLaren’s lead over Mercedes in the constructors’ standings to 105 points.
Reflecting on the current lineup, Brown said, “I’m a happy camper,” emphasizing his confidence in the duo that continues to deliver results for the team.
