McLaren test issues EXPOSED ahead of F1 title bid

Adrian Newey, the legendary F1 designer, has shed light on some of the testing challenges faced by his former team, McLaren, ahead of their 2025 title bid. Newey, who joined McLaren as their technical director in 1997, had previously made a name for himself at Williams, where his innovative designs helped them secure multiple championships in their peak years.

Although McLaren didn’t immediately challenge for the title in 1997, Newey’s influence quickly began to shine through, and by the start of the 1998 season, McLaren was a dominant force. Their success continued for several years, with Newey playing a key role in their last championship win until the team returned to the top of the F1 standings in 2024.

In a twist of fate, McLaren dethroned Red Bull, the team Newey had helped elevate to a position of dominance, right before he left Christian Horner’s outfit after an incredibly successful stint. Newey had been with Red Bull for over a decade, and his departure marked the end of one of the most productive and successful technical partnerships in F1 history.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Newey is on gardening leave as he prepares for his next challenge at Aston Martin, marking his fifth team in Formula 1. While McLaren has been fine-tuning their car during pre-season testing, Newey is not involved, as Aston Martin pushes their car to its limits without his direct input for now.

During his time away from active F1 involvement, Newey reflected on his career, sharing insights into his time with McLaren in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport. One key recollection was his experience working with legendary driver Mika Häkkinen, who was known for his less-than-ideal communication skills regarding the car’s performance. Despite this, Newey praised Häkkinen’s ability to provide valuable feedback, particularly noting how their collaboration began at a 1997 pre-race test in Monza.

Newey’s work at McLaren was critical in developing cars that were not only fast but also balanced, helping elevate the team to championship-winning heights. However, the journey wasn’t without challenges, as testing and development often brought to light various issues that needed to be addressed before they could turn the car into a title contender.
