Mercedes Weighs Lewis Hamilton’s Decision to Leave: “I Think if We’d Been W… Read More.

Mercedes F1 chief Andrew Shovlin has shared insights into Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected move to Ferrari, suggesting the decision wasn’t solely driven by the car’s performance.

Hamilton’s switch in February was a major surprise, especially since his contract with Mercedes extended until the end of 2025. Hamilton has been deeply integrated into the Mercedes family, beginning his F1 journey with McLaren.

Despite Mercedes’ challenging start to the season, the team has recently found their footing, securing victories in three of the last four races as they head into the Dutch Grand Prix.

Reflecting on this during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Shovlin considered whether Hamilton might have stayed if he had foreseen Mercedes’ mid-season resurgence.

Shovlin stated, “I think if we’d been winning championships, it would have been difficult for Lewis to say no.”

However, he emphasized that Hamilton’s reasons went beyond car performance. “He clearly wants to have another chapter in his career beyond his very successful one with Mercedes.”

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, is at a point in his career where, if he wished to pursue new challenges with another team, the timing was crucial.

Shovlin added, “He’s of an age where if he was going to do that, he would need to do it sooner rather than later.

And as I said, if we were dominating a championship, I suspect it would have been difficult for him to do that. But I think a big part of Lewis is wanting to have another team and another challenge in his career.

I think when someone’s decided that they want to do that, it can be quite difficult to persuade them otherwise.”

Hamilton has continued to demonstrate his skill and determination despite the change. Only Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri have outscored him in the last eight races.

Additionally, Hamilton has added to his already impressive record of 103 wins, securing victories at Silverstone and Spa, bringing his career total to 105.

Shovlin’s comments reflect a nuanced understanding of Hamilton’s decision.

While Mercedes’ competitive form might have swayed Hamilton, his move to Ferrari appears to be driven by a deeper desire for a new chapter in his illustrious career.

Hamilton’s longstanding relationship with Mercedes and his significant contributions to their successes underscore the weight of his decision.

Yet, his quest for fresh challenges and experiences seems to have been a compelling factor.

Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari marks a significant shift in the F1 landscape. As he seeks to write a new chapter with Ferrari, the move also signals a potential new era for Mercedes.

The team’s recent performance indicates that they remain a formidable force, capable of winning races and competing at the highest level.

This decision also highlights the dynamic nature of F1 careers, where drivers often seek new challenges and opportunities to redefine their legacies.

For Hamilton, joining Ferrari represents an opportunity to leave an indelible mark with another historic team.

For Mercedes, it’s a chance to prove their resilience and adaptability in the face of change.

Hamilton’s achievements this season, despite the team switch, are a testament to his enduring talent and competitive spirit.

His victories at Silverstone and Spa reinforce his status as one of the greatest drivers in F1 history. As he embarks on this new journey with Ferrari, the F1 world will keenly watch how this next chapter unfolds.

Shovlin’s reflections offer a balanced perspective on Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes. While performance and competitive prospects are crucial, Hamilton’s personal motivations and desire for a new challenge were significant factors.

This decision underscores the complex interplay of career aspirations, team dynamics, and the ever-evolving narrative of Formula 1.
