Mexico City GP: Verstappen’s Engine Troubles Persist, Russell Crashes in Practice
Max Verstappen’s struggles with engine issues continued during Practice Two at the Mexico City Grand Prix, limiting the championship leader’s time on the track. He completed only four laps and couldn’t set a time after his Practice One session was also interrupted by engine troubles. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner initially downplayed the issue, calling it “menial,” but it resurfaced in the second session, cutting Verstappen’s time short.
Adding to the eventful day, George Russell suffered a heavy crash in his Mercedes just 12 minutes into Practice Two, where he lost control at Turn 8 and collided with the barrier at high speed. Though shaken, Russell was cleared at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez medical center, exiting his W15 cautiously but ultimately unharmed.
The second practice session was extended to 90 minutes, providing teams with extra time to test next year’s tire compounds. Russell had displayed strong pace, topping the timesheets for Mercedes in Practice One before his crash derailed the rest of his day.
Amid the on-track drama, an off-track battle took place as McLaren’s appeal against Lando Norris’s penalty from the United States Grand Prix was denied. The penalty, which followed an overtake on Verstappen, was upheld after a video conference involving McLaren, Red Bull, and the FIA between Friday’s practice sessions.
Qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix is set for Saturday at 10 p.m., with the race itself scheduled for Sunday at 8 p.m.
