Monaco Grand Prix Grid Shake-Up as Lewis Hamilton and Lance Stroll Hit with Penalties
Significant changes have been made to the starting grid of the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix after both Lewis Hamilton and Lance Stroll received grid penalties for impeding other drivers during qualifying. The stewards handed each driver a three-place penalty, altering the dynamics of the front half of the grid at a circuit where overtaking is infamously difficult.
Hamilton, who had originally qualified fourth, will now start the race from seventh position. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll, who was already toward the back of the pack, has been relegated to the very last position on the grid. These penalties could have a major impact on both drivers’ race prospects, especially on the tight, narrow streets of Monaco where track position is crucial and opportunities to overtake are extremely limited.
The incident involving Hamilton occurred during a tense moment in Q3. The Ferrari driver was on a cooldown lap when Max Verstappen, on a flying lap, came up behind him at speed. Hamilton, who was partially on the racing line, did not move aside in time, causing Verstappen to abort his lap. The confusion appears to have stemmed from a miscommunication within the Ferrari team. Hamilton’s race engineer, Riccardo Adami, reportedly informed him that Verstappen was on a slow lap, leading Hamilton to believe he did not need to get out of the way.
Verstappen was visibly frustrated over the radio, exclaiming his disbelief at the situation. Hamilton also expressed surprise when told that he had impeded Verstappen, insisting that he had been given incorrect information by his team. After the session, the two champions spoke briefly and appeared to agree that the fault lay more with Ferrari’s communication error than with Hamilton’s intentions.
Despite the mitigating circumstances, the race stewards determined that Hamilton’s presence on the racing line had directly impacted Verstappen’s qualifying run and issued a three-place penalty. This means Hamilton will now start from P7, with Verstappen promoted to P4. Filling the positions between them will be rookie Isack Hadjar, who starts in fifth, and veteran Fernando Alonso, who benefits from the reshuffle to line up in sixth.
Lance Stroll’s situation was more clear-cut, as he was judged to have impeded another driver in a separate incident. With a poor qualifying session already behind him, the penalty sends him to the back of the grid, compounding a difficult weekend for the Aston Martin driver.
With these changes, the Monaco Grand Prix grid takes on a new shape, potentially shifting team strategies for Sunday’s race. While Hamilton has the pace to move forward, the tight layout of Monaco could make recovery difficult. Verstappen, now starting closer to the front, may find himself in a stronger position to challenge for a podium finish or even the win.
