Mystery ‘Ferrari F1 Driver’ Finally Caught After Years of Driving Race Car on Public Roads

Authorities in the Czech Republic have finally apprehended a man who gained notoriety for driving what looked like a Ferrari Formula 1 car on public highways. The mystery driver, who had evaded identification for more than six years, is now facing a potential driving ban after police confirmed his arrest.

The bizarre saga began back in 2019, when footage first appeared online showing a single-seater racing car being driven at speed along a national highway. The striking red machine, styled in Ferrari-like colours, instantly went viral, with many speculating whether it was a real F1 car or an elaborate replica. Despite the attention, the individual behind the wheel was never found, and the case seemed to disappear into obscurity.

However, the unusual sight returned to the spotlight last weekend. Local motorists once again reported seeing the same distinctive car traveling on Czech roads, sparking renewed interest and prompting police involvement. According to eyewitness accounts, the driver had even stopped to refuel the car, which drew immediate attention from bystanders who contacted authorities.

Police acted quickly. On Sunday, September 7, 2025, officers tracked down and intercepted the vehicle in the village of Buk after it had been spotted speeding on the D4 motorway. The driver was identified as a 51-year-old man, who was promptly detained and taken to a district police station for questioning.

In an official statement shared via social media, the Czech police confirmed the arrest. Their post read: “Thanks to information from drivers, we stopped a Formula driver this morning in the village of Buk who was speeding along the D4 motorway. Police officers identified the driver as a 51-year-old man and then took him to the district police station for questioning.”

While the car initially appeared to be a Ferrari F1 machine, closer inspection revealed that it was not an official Scuderia Ferrari vehicle. Instead, it is believed to be a Dallara-built GP2 car, modified and decorated in a livery resembling Ferrari’s red, though one never actually used in Formula 1 competition.

This clarification did little to lessen the public’s fascination. For many, the image of a high-performance race car cruising past everyday traffic was both surreal and alarming. Authorities, however, emphasized the risks involved. Driving such machinery on public roads is both illegal and highly dangerous, given the lack of safety features such as proper headlights, mirrors, or number plates, not to mention the noise levels and limited visibility.

The police have since confirmed that the man faces possible penalties, which could include a driving ban. His actions, while extraordinary to onlookers, breached multiple traffic and safety regulations. Officials also underlined that the six-year-long hunt to identify and stop the driver had finally concluded, thanks to the vigilance of ordinary road users who reported his movements.

This unusual case has attracted international headlines, not only because of the Ferrari branding but also because of the long period during which the driver managed to remain unidentified. It highlights the increasing role of social media in aiding law enforcement, as the viral spread of videos and photographs provided valuable leads for investigators.

For now, the fate of the so-called “mystery Ferrari F1 driver” rests in the hands of Czech authorities, who are expected to hand down a decision on his punishment in the coming weeks.
