Norris Tops 2024 F1 Power Rankings, Hamilton Misses Out as Verstappen Falls Short of First

The 2024 Formula 1 season has been thrilling, with a record seven different race winners, and fans have eagerly followed the updated power rankings after each Grand Prix. These rankings, sponsored by Aramco and determined by a five-judge panel, focus purely on driver performance, excluding any influence of car performance. However, the latest rankings have stirred controversy, with Lewis Hamilton notably absent from the top 10 and Max Verstappen surprisingly placed second.

A Season of Surprises and Strong Performances

This season has delivered outstanding displays across the grid. From Charles Leclerc’s perfect 10.0 rating at Monaco to Hamilton’s impressive 9.4 at Silverstone, and even Verstappen’s 9.8 for a strong performance in Brazil, there have been many standout moments. With just three races remaining, the rankings are almost set, leaving fans and experts alike debating some of the unexpected placements.

Norris Leads the Way

To the surprise of many, McLaren’s Lando Norris currently tops the rankings with an 8.3 average, narrowly beating Verstappen, who sits at 8.2. Norris has had a season of highs and lows, with seven pole positions but only one converted into a lap-one lead. Still, his three victories, including a commanding win in Singapore, have solidified his place as a top performer this season. He also ranks second in the Drivers’ Championship, showing a steady progression over recent years. Despite some criticism for his starts, his consistency across races has evidently impressed the judging panel.

Verstappen in Second, Fans Left Baffled

Max Verstappen’s 8.2 average has left many fans puzzled, considering he has led the championship for the entire season and consistently delivered high-quality performances. Some fans argue that his overtaking abilities and racecraft should have given him the top spot, especially given his comeback drives and leadership in points. However, the panel’s system, focused solely on driving quality and independent of machinery, placed him just behind Norris.

The Complete Top 10 for 2024

Alongside Norris and Verstappen, several other drivers have impressed this season. The top 10 rankings for the 2024 season are as follows:

1. Lando Norris – 8.3

2. Max Verstappen – 8.2

3. Liam Lawson – 7.9

4. Charles Leclerc – 7.8

5. Oscar Piastri – 7.7

6. Ollie Bearman – 7.7

7. Carlos Sainz – 7.5

8. George Russell – 7.4

9. Franco Colapinto – 7.2

10. Nico Hulkenberg – 7.1

Notably, Liam Lawson’s consistency has earned him third place with a 7.9 average, while Leclerc follows closely at 7.8. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s promising young driver Ollie Bearman both sit at 7.7, tying for fifth. Carlos Sainz’s steady performances put him in seventh, while George Russell comes in at eighth with 7.4, just ahead of Franco Colapinto and Nico Hulkenberg.

Hamilton’s Absence and Fan Reactions

The absence of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton from the top 10 sparked mixed reactions. Many fans believe Hamilton has had moments of brilliance, such as his impressive finish at Silverstone, yet his overall average fell short in the panel’s rankings. Hamilton’s omission has left some fans feeling the list doesn’t fully reflect the season’s best performers.

Fans took to social media to share their thoughts, with one noting, “Charles has been the best driver. Ferrari has been very consistent without a rocket ship.” Another added, “Norris lost his P1 position and Max came from the back of the grid with a legendary performance.”

As F1 heads into its final races, the rankings have highlighted this season’s intense competition, with each top driver demonstrating skill and resilience on the track. While some choices remain contentious, the rankings reflect the impressive depth of talent in Formula 1 this year.
