Perez makes BLOCKBUSTER announcement following Red Bull’s…read more

Sergio Perez has made a significant announcement on social media, following his recent exit from Red Bull after a challenging 2024 Formula 1 season. The Mexican driver revealed a new collaboration, taking to Instagram to promote the release of Mufasa, a Disney film that hit cinemas on December 20, just in time for the Christmas season.

Perez, who was replaced by Liam Lawson at Red Bull after a disappointing year, has been struggling with performance issues in 2024. He failed to score a podium finish after April’s Chinese Grand Prix and finished a distant eighth in the drivers’ standings, a staggering 285 points behind his teammate, Max Verstappen. Despite being alongside Verstappen during his four consecutive World Championship wins, Perez only secured five race victories during his time at Red Bull.

The news of Perez being replaced marks the end of his tenure at the team, and while his immediate future in Formula 1 is uncertain, he is expected to take a sabbatical for the 2025 season. There are no available spots for him on the grid next year, and Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, mentioned that Perez could have a role as a brand ambassador for the team in the near future. Perez’s recent struggles have made it unlikely that any other teams would offer him a seat for the time being. However, the F1 grid will see two more seats open in 2026 with the arrival of Cadillac, which may present an opportunity for Perez later on.

Horner also commented that Perez moving to Red Bull’s sister team, VCARB, wouldn’t be the right fit at this stage in his career. VCARB is more focused on developing young talent, while Perez, now 34, may be at a different stage in his racing journey.

Despite these challenges, Perez continues to showcase his marketing power. On Instagram, he posted a photo sporting a Mufasa-themed T-shirt to promote the film’s release. The movie, a prequel to the iconic 1994 animated classic The Lion King, is expected to do well at the box office, with projections of over $50 million in its opening weekend. Perez’s endorsement of the film, which is available in cinemas in his native Spanish, demonstrates his ongoing influence off the track as he adjusts to life beyond Formula 1 for the time being.
