Perez NEW F1 role announced after Red Bull axe
Sergio Perez has been given a new role within Formula 1 after losing his seat at Red Bull following a difficult 2024 season. The Mexican driver, who began the year strongly with four podiums in the first five races, saw his performance significantly decline as the season progressed, leading to a challenging year overall. His struggles with pace became apparent, and this contributed to Red Bull’s third-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship, with McLaren and Ferrari surpassing the reigning champions.
The performance issues with Perez ultimately led to Red Bull’s decision to part ways with him before the 2025 season. The team wasted no time in announcing Liam Lawson as Perez’s replacement. While the decision to remove Perez from the team was a tough one, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has acknowledged the contributions the driver made during his time with the team. In a gesture of goodwill, Horner also revealed that Perez would continue to have a role within the Red Bull organization in a new capacity, though away from the track.
Perez’s departure marks the end of a turbulent chapter at Red Bull. Despite the early-season success, where he showed competitive pace alongside teammate Max Verstappen, the latter half of the year exposed significant gaps in his performance. Throughout the season, Perez was unable to maintain consistency, and his struggles in qualifying, race pace, and strategic decision-making were glaring. As a result, Red Bull found themselves in a tight battle with McLaren and Ferrari, eventually finishing behind both teams in the constructors’ standings.
The decision to replace Perez with Lawson reflects Red Bull’s commitment to ensuring that they remain the dominant force in Formula 1, especially with Verstappen’s continued excellence and their desire to maintain top-tier results across both cars. Lawson, who impressed during his limited outings with the team as a reserve driver, is expected to bring a fresh dynamic and push for stronger performances alongside Verstappen.
Christian Horner’s praise for Perez’s time at Red Bull shows the respect the team has for the Mexican driver, who was integral to the team’s success in 2022 when he helped secure the constructors’ title. Perez’s role in Red Bull’s history, particularly in helping them maintain a dominant position in Formula 1, will not be overlooked, and Horner’s comments suggest that there may still be opportunities for Perez to contribute to the team in a different way going forward.
Despite being replaced on the track, Perez’s future within the Red Bull organization could still hold promise, potentially in a leadership or ambassadorial role within the F1 team. This new chapter in Perez’s career will be one to watch as the 2025 season approaches.
