Red Bull chief confirms Perez replacement decision

Red Bull has shared a significant update regarding Sergio Perez’s future with the team.

The Mexican driver has faced a challenging 2024 Formula 1 season, with his struggles continuing at the recent Las Vegas Grand Prix, where he finished 10th.

This followed a poor qualifying session in which he was eliminated in Q1 after finishing 16th.

Perez has managed just 49 points in his last 16 races and currently sits eighth in the drivers’ standings with only two races left in the season.

Despite signing a contract extension earlier this year, mounting pressure has raised questions about his position in the team for the future.

Red Bull, typically dominant in the constructors’ championship, is now set to finish third behind McLaren and Ferrari.

While Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive drivers’ championship in Las Vegas, Perez’s lack of consistent performance has hindered the team’s efforts.

Verstappen has also faced challenges with the car but has managed to deliver results, unlike his teammate.

Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, has supported Perez publicly throughout the season, but there are signs that the team’s patience may be wearing thin.

Red Bull’s junior drivers, Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, have been mentioned as potential candidates to replace Perez if the team decides to make changes ahead of the 2025 season.

However, according to Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, a decision on Perez’s future will not be made until after the season finale in Abu Dhabi on December 8.

When asked about Perez’s prospects of staying with the team for 2025, Marko stated: “That will be decided after the finale in Abu Dhabi. In any case, Checo is acting as if he would drive for us for another year.”

This statement leaves Perez’s future uncertain, with the team yet to confirm whether he will continue alongside Verstappen in the upcoming seasons.

For now, all eyes will be on his performance in the remaining races as he seeks to solidify his position at Red Bull.
