Huge Mercedes change revealed as SHOCK departure confirmed in official announcement
Mercedes has announced significant changes for its Formula 1 team as it prepares for a new chapter, marking a transformative period just before the close of the 2024 season.
The Brackley-based team, which has historically dominated the sport with eight constructors’ championships, has had a challenging year.
Although there were unexpected wins for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell before the summer break, Mercedes has largely underperformed this season and currently holds fourth place in the standings, with only three races left.
Looking ahead, Mercedes is gearing up for a fresh start and has confirmed an exciting addition to the team: young Italian driver Kimi Antonelli, who will replace Hamilton.
This change comes as Hamilton, at 39, prepares to join Ferrari, where he will team up with Charles Leclerc in the 2025 season.
Antonelli’s arrival represents Mercedes’ vision for the future as they strive to reestablish their presence as championship contenders.
Mercedes has also revealed a new multi-year engine supply agreement with Alpine, further highlighting its long-term plans.
Starting in 2026 and lasting until at least 2030, Mercedes will provide power units to Alpine under the updated regulations.
In addition to engines, Mercedes will also supply Alpine with gearboxes, a move that emphasizes the strategic importance of partnerships as the F1 landscape evolves.
Alpine will continue using its own engines for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, after which they will transition to Mercedes power units and gearboxes.
This change aligns with new F1 regulations, which are set to take effect in 2026 and are expected to shake up the competitive structure.
The Alpine team had previously indicated plans to discontinue their engine program, leading to widespread speculation about their next steps. This collaboration with Mercedes has now been confirmed as Alpine’s path forward.
An official statement from Alpine stated: “The multi-year agreement will see Mercedes-Benz supply Alpine with Power Units for the duration of the new regulations era, from 2026 until at least 2030.
Alongside the Power Unit, Alpine will also be supplied with Mercedes gearboxes from the 2026 season.
The team remains focused on performing in the strongest way possible in the 2024 and 2025 seasons.”
This announcement follows a strong performance by Alpine in the Brazilian Grand Prix, where both Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly achieved podium finishes, placing just behind Max Verstappen.
Their success in Brazil moved Alpine up to sixth in the constructors’ standings, a boost for the team in an otherwise challenging season.
Overall, Mercedes’ recent moves signal a pivotal moment as the team looks to reclaim its place at the top of Formula 1.
