Mercedes Struggles with Performance Fluctuations: Toto Wolff Suspects New Floor as Key Factor

Mercedes’ performance on the track has seen significant swings in recent weeks, leaving the team searching for answers. Following an impressive showing in Belgium, the Silver Arrows faltered dramatically at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, finishing seventh and eighth. Wolff has made it clear that the team is uncertain about the root cause of the performance drop-off. “These cars are sometimes like a surprise box,” Wolff remarked during a press conference. “We had six podiums in a row, but this car was nothing like the single-seater that finished first and second three weeks ago.”

One of the main areas of focus is the new floor that Mercedes introduced at the Belgian Grand Prix. The team only tested the floor during practice sessions at Spa, choosing not to use it in the race due to the unpredictable weather conditions. However, they decided to run with the updated floor in Zandvoort, where they gathered limited data due to the challenging conditions.

Despite Mercedes’ decision to stick with the new floor, the results in Zandvoort were disappointing. The car’s performance fell short of expectations, prompting Wolff to question whether the new floor might be a contributing factor to the downturn. “Such a result cannot be born without some important factor at play. We will have to analyze it in the following days before Monza,” Wolff said, acknowledging the severity of the situation.

The upcoming Italian Grand Prix at Monza will be crucial for Mercedes as they seek to identify the source of their issues. Wolff hinted that the new floor could come under scrutiny, and the team plans to conduct a thorough comparison between the old and new floors during the practice sessions in Monza. “I think two factors played a role. On Friday, we directly compared the car with the upgraded package, but in the end we didn’t get much data from it. We also put the improved package on the car on Friday at Spa, but then we took it back,” Wolff explained.

The Mercedes team is determined to find answers, with Wolff stating that they will leave no stone unturned in their investigation. “We didn’t drive a lot and maybe we didn’t do the right things on the single seater. There could be a few factors at play that contributed to this performance,” he added. The team’s engineers will analyze data from the past few races to determine whether the problem lies with the floor, the setup, or a combination of factors.

With Monza on the horizon, Wolff is hopeful that Mercedes can resolve the issues and return to a competitive level. The fluctuation in performance from securing podium finishes to struggling to make the top six has raised alarm bells within the team, indicating that there may be a significant underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

As Mercedes prepares for Monza, the team is focused on finding the answers that will help them regain their form. Wolff’s cautious approach reflects the uncertainty surrounding the situation, but he remains optimistic that they will be able to identify the problem and bounce back. “We hope that by Monza we will be able to solve it and be competitive. That performance fluctuation from first and second place to seventh and eighth indicates that there is something big behind it. In my opinion, it will not be caused only by a simple decision about the settings,” Wolff concluded.

The next few days will be critical for Mercedes as they work to ensure that their performance in Monza aligns with the high standards they have set for themselves.
