Toyota Clarifies: No Plans for Full F1 Return

Despite its newly announced technical partnership with Haas F1, Toyota has confirmed that it has no intentions of re-entering Formula 1 as a team or engine supplier. Masaya Kaji, the director of Toyota Gazoo Racing, emphasized this point, stating, “We have no plans to have a team. Nor are we planning to offer the supply of a power unit at this time.”

Speculation Surrounding Toyota’s Return

Rumors about Toyota’s potential return to F1 were reignited following the announcement of their operational partnership with Haas. Even Toyota’s chairman, Akio Toyoda, attended the event, which added to the speculation. However, Toyoda was quick to shut down these rumors, highlighting that their priority is to inspire Japanese children rather than focus on F1.

Reflection on Toyota’s F1 Past

Toyoda also expressed regret over Toyota’s 2009 F1 exit, stating that the move deprived young Japanese drivers of the opportunity to compete at the highest level. “I think deep down, this guy always regretted that,” he said.

Toyota’s Role in Supporting Haas

Although Ferrari remains the primary supplier of engines and gearboxes for Haas, Toyota will assist the American team by offering access to its Cologne F1 facilities, including component manufacturing and simulators. Haas boss Ayao Komatsu stressed that the Ferrari partnership remains central to their operations.

Future Speculation: Is Haas for Sale?

Former Toyota F1 driver Ralf Schumacher speculated that this partnership might hint at Haas being up for sale, suggesting that the collaboration could lead to Haas becoming a bigger team. Schumacher noted, “Formula 1 has become a cash cow, and Toyota’s image hasn’t been particularly good recently.”

This collaboration is seen as a technical venture for now, with no long-term plans for Toyota’s full F1 return.
