Formula 1 icon Bernie Ecclestone recently revealed that he advised Sebastian Vettel against a potential return to the sport. Vettel, a four-time world champion, retired from F1 in 2022, ending his career with Aston Martin.
Since stepping away, he has focused on environmental initiatives and recently made a brief appearance at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Vettel first achieved success with Red Bull Racing, helping the team secure its early dominance in the sport by winning four consecutive drivers’ championships from 2010 to 2013.
Following his time at Red Bull, Vettel joined Ferrari, aiming to bring the Italian team back to championship glory.
However, his tenure at Ferrari didn’t reach the same heights. Despite strong efforts, he was ultimately unable to clinch another title and was outperformed by rival Lewis Hamilton, particularly during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
In recent months, the idea of a Vettel comeback has sparked interest within the F1 community, especially with Audi’s upcoming full entry into the sport.
Audi, which will take over Sauber as a factory team in 2026, is expected to be a serious competitor once their preparations are complete.
As rumors swirled, some speculated that Vettel might be a good fit for the team as it transitions.
However, the team recently announced its driver lineup for the 2025 season, confirming Nico Hulkenberg and Brazilian newcomer Gabriel Bortoleto, effectively ruling out any potential Vettel return with Audi for the time being.
Ecclestone, a long-time figure in F1, shared insights from a recent interaction with Vettel and former driver Gerhard Berger.
During an interview with Blick journalist Roger Benoit at his home, Ecclestone received a call from Berger and Vettel, during which the topic of a comeback was raised.
Ecclestone reportedly advised Vettel against it, questioning why a four-time world champion would subject himself to the intense demands of a return.
“I had to talk him out of his comeback dreams,” Ecclestone said, suggesting that it may be unnecessary for Vettel to re-enter such a competitive environment after achieving so much.
For now, a Vettel comeback seems unlikely, especially given Ecclestone’s concerns and the confirmation of Audi’s driver roster.
Although the allure of F1 remains strong, Ecclestone and others close to Vettel appear to feel that his legacy as a four-time champion remains secure without a return.
