The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for their preseason opener against the Houston Texans, and head coach Mike Tomlin provided some key updates on which players will be participating.
Some of the team’s top veterans, including T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Isaac Seumalo, and Alex Highsmith, will not be playing in the preseason opener.
These players are expected to rest this game, likely taking the field for a few snaps in the following week’s game.
However, the situation is more uncertain for Russell Wilson, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Patrick Queen.
Tomlin confirmed that all three will miss the game due to minor injuries sustained during training camp. Wilson has been sidelined for most of training camp, only recently rejoining team drills.
Fitzpatrick and Queen’s injuries are more recent, and while it’s hoped that this is a precautionary measure, their availability for the next game remains unclear.
Other than these absences, it appears that the rest of the Steelers’ roster will see some action on Friday.
Tomlin specifically mentioned that quarterback Justin Fields will get “a couple of series” with the first-team offense, excluding Seumalo.
This game will be crucial for Fields as he continues to develop chemistry with his receivers and strengthens his case to start in week one of the regular season.
Tomlin also provided clarity on where 2023 first-round pick Broderick Jones will play, revealing that Jones will rotate between both tackle positions during the game.
Dan Moore Jr. will start, while 2024 first-round pick Troy Fautanu will get his opportunity with the second-team offensive line.
Additionally, fans should keep an eye on some promising young players who are expected to play significant roles in Friday’s game.
Beanie Bishop, an undrafted rookie, has earned the starting nickel corner spot and will be looking to prove himself.
Nick Herbig is slated to start at outside linebacker as he aims to build on a strong rookie season.
Meanwhile, 2024 second-round pick Zach Frazier may not start, but he’s expected to get substantial playing time once Nate Herbig finishes his reps.
