‘All Hell Broke Loose’: Helmut Marko  on Verstappen’s …read more

Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko has candidly addressed the tumultuous events involving Max Verstappen at the recent Spanish Grand Prix, describing the situation as one where “all hell broke loose.”

The incident in question occurred during the final laps of the race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Following a safety car period, Verstappen was instructed by his team to allow Mercedes driver George Russell to pass. Initially complying by lifting off the throttle, Verstappen then unexpectedly accelerated, leading to a collision with Russell.

Marko expressed his bewilderment over Verstappen’s actions, stating, “I don’t know what kind of misjudgment or thought process was going on inside him. And then, as they say, all hell broke loose.” He acknowledged that emotions had overtaken the driver, resulting in unnecessary consequences.

The aftermath saw Verstappen penalized with a 10-second time penalty, dropping him from fourth to tenth place, and accruing three penalty points on his Super Licence. This brings his total to 11 points, just one shy of an automatic race ban.

Verstappen later admitted on social media that his move was “not right and shouldn’t have happened,” attributing his actions to frustration in the heat of the moment.

As the Formula 1 community reflects on this incident, attention turns to the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix, where Verstappen will need to exercise caution to avoid further penalties that could jeopardize his participation in future races.
