Double Snub for Lewis Hamilton in EA Sports’ F1 …read

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton may be one of the most iconic drivers in Formula 1 history, but that didn’t stop EA Sports from dealing him a surprising double blow in their upcoming F1 25 video game. The latest installment in the racing simulation series has sparked controversy among fans and pundits alike after Hamilton was left off the cover and snubbed in the top driver ratings—an omission many see as disrespectful to one of the sport’s greatest legends.

EA Sports recently unveiled the cover stars for F1 25, choosing rising talents Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Lando Norris (McLaren), and George Russell (Mercedes) for the standard edition. This trio represents the new generation of F1, all of whom are in their prime and poised to take over the grid. While Russell, Hamilton’s current teammate, made the cut, Hamilton himself was nowhere to be seen—despite his record-breaking career and continued popularity.

If that weren’t enough, the driver ratings—a key feature in the game used to reflect real-life performance and skill—delivered a second snub. Hamilton did not receive the highest overall rating, losing out to reigning world champion Max Verstappen, who topped the list with a 96 rating. Hamilton, although still ranked among the best, was rated lower, sparking outrage from loyal fans who believe the Brit deserves better.

On social media, the backlash was swift. “Leaving Lewis Hamilton off the cover of F1 25 is a joke,” one fan tweeted. “He’s literally the face of Formula 1.” Another wrote, “Max gets 96, but Lewis doesn’t? EA Sports has lost the plot.”

Critics argue that the decision reflects a larger trend in sports gaming where veterans are overlooked in favor of younger, flashier athletes. While it’s understandable that EA would want to market up-and-coming stars to attract new players, many feel this came at the cost of honoring a driver who has not only shaped the sport but remains competitive at the highest level.

Let’s not forget, Hamilton has seven world titles to his name, tied with the legendary Michael Schumacher. He holds the records for most career wins, pole positions, and podiums, and he continues to fight at the front of the grid in his 18th season in Formula 1. His influence stretches beyond racing too—he’s a cultural icon, fashion innovator, and outspoken advocate for diversity and equality in motorsport.

By contrast, George Russell—who has yet to win a world title—made the cover. Though he’s undoubtedly talented and a future contender, his inclusion over Hamilton raises eyebrows. Is EA trying to appeal to a younger audience, or is this a calculated move to shift the narrative toward the next generation of drivers?

Whatever the reasoning, the decision hasn’t gone down well. Many are calling on EA Sports to reconsider or at least acknowledge Hamilton’s absence. Some fans are even threatening to boycott the game altogether, claiming they won’t support a product that seemingly disrespects one of the sport’s greatest champions.

Hamilton himself has not commented publicly on the snub, but given his composed demeanor, he’s unlikely to engage in any public feud over it. Still, fans are hoping EA might make it up to him with future updates, special editions, or downloadable content (DLC) that give him the spotlight he deserves.

As the release date for F1 25 approaches, the controversy continues to build. Whether this double snub will hurt EA’s sales or push the company to make amends remains to be seen. One thing is clear: leaving Lewis Hamilton out of the conversation is a risky move—and fans aren’t letting it slide quietly.
