F1 Boss Discusses Potential Driver Transfers and Future Plans ahead of…..read more
The 2025 Formula 1 season is already shaping up to be an eventful one, with multiple high-profile driver moves on the horizon. One of the most talked-about changes involves the seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, whose potential switch to Ferrari has set off a domino effect throughout the paddock. The speculation surrounding Hamilton’s future has led to a flurry of activity in the driver market, with several teams making significant moves.
Williams has secured Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, marking the end of his tenure at the Scuderia. Meanwhile, Sauber has added the experienced Nico Hulkenberg to their ranks, further strengthening their driver lineup. Haas has also made a strategic move by signing Esteban Ocon, following his replacement at Alpine by Jack Doohan for the 2025 season. Doohan, at just 21 years old, will partner Pierre Gasly in a promising new duo for Alpine as they aim to build on a successful 2024 campaign that saw them finish sixth in the Constructors’ Championship.
Despite the season not having officially started, rumors have already begun swirling about potential driver changes, with Alpine at the center of speculation. The most notable of these rumors involves the potential replacement of Jack Doohan by Williams’ Franco Colapinto. Colapinto, who impressed in 2024 by stepping in for the struggling Logan Sargeant at Williams, seemed to be a rising star. However, his performance began to dip toward the end of the season due to mistakes and high-profile crashes, leading to questions about his consistency.
Alpine, however, has addressed these rumors through an official statement, making it clear that no immediate driver changes are planned. Alpine’s executive, Flavio Briatore, confirmed that while Colapinto’s potential is recognized, the team is focused on their current driver lineup for 2025. Briatore spoke to Auto Motor und Sport, acknowledging Colapinto’s talent but reiterating that Alpine already has contracts in place with Gasly, Doohan, and another rising talent, Aron, for the upcoming season.
“We are always interested in fast drivers,” Briatore stated. “Colapinto surprised many, but we are already committed to Gasly and Doohan for next year. If there is an opportunity for Colapinto in 2026 when we switch to Mercedes power units, we would have to consider it. But you must be cautious when evaluating drivers. In Formula 1, it’s easy to get carried away by one good performance. Suddenly, a driver’s value skyrockets, and the price can rise to 20 or 30 million dollars.”
Briatore emphasized that Alpine is mindful of its driver development strategy, pointing out that there is a wealth of young talent emerging from Formula 2 and Formula 3. “The choice of drivers today is far broader than it was in the past. There are six or seven promising drivers in the lower categories, and we want to focus on those with the most potential. Our focus will be on nurturing our academy drivers, rather than casting a wide net. Ultimately, it may come down to just three drivers: Aron, Mini, and Martins.”
As the 2025 season draws closer, it’s clear that Alpine and other teams are taking a strategic approach to their driver selections, weighing both current commitments and future potential. With a competitive driver market and several teams in the mix, the next few seasons of F1 promise to be full of surprises and fierce competition.
