F1 safety car crashes into barriers at high speed in unusual Italian Grand Prix incident

In an unexpected incident, the Formula One safety car crashed into the barriers at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza circuit ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.

The vehicle, driven by Bernd Maylander, was conducting test laps when it failed to navigate the Parabolica corner, resulting in a collision with the barriers. Fortunately, neither Maylander nor the passenger was injured.

This incident occurred on a quiet Thursday, with no Formula One cars scheduled to be on the track until Friday’s practice session.

However, the paddock has already seen significant developments, with Williams announcing the replacement of Logan Sargeant with Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the season, starting with the Italian Grand Prix.

Sargeant’s departure comes after a challenging season, with the American driver yet to score points and having accumulated only one point in his previous 36 races.

His early exit was reportedly prompted by a crash during practice at the Dutch GP, which seemed to hasten the team’s decision to make a change.

The safety car incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in high-speed racing, even for experienced drivers like Maylander.

Meanwhile, the driver shuffle at Williams adds to the excitement and unpredictability of the Formula One season, with Colapinto set to make his debut at the iconic Monza circuit.
