Ferrari boss hints at F1 driver RETURN after…read more

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has hinted at the possibility of a future return for Carlos Sainz to Ferrari following the departure of Lewis Hamilton. Sainz, currently driving for Ferrari, is set to make way for Hamilton next season, as the seven-time world champion leaves Mercedes after a highly successful 12-year stint with the team.

At 39 years old, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari marks a new chapter in his illustrious career, though his age suggests that his time in F1 may be limited. Meanwhile, Sainz, who is 30 and has four Grand Prix wins to his name, is also entering the final phase of his career, with his next move likely to be his last team switch, barring any unforeseen developments. Although he remains committed to Ferrari for now, Sainz’s future is a topic of speculation, especially considering that Williams, among other teams, could offer him an opportunity to drive for a team capable of competing for regular race victories in the coming years.

Despite Sainz’s imminent departure from Ferrari, Vasseur has made it clear that the door remains open for a potential return in the future. The French team principal acknowledged that discussions have already occurred regarding the prospect of bringing Sainz back to Ferrari once Hamilton eventually steps away from the sport.

“In the future, the door is certainly open for him,” Vasseur told DAZN. “We’ve already talked about this a couple of times. This is a very small world, there are only 10 teams and only 6 or 7 top drivers, and you never know what can happen in the future.”

Vasseur emphasized that while these talks have taken place, both he and Sainz need to stay focused on the present and their current projects. “But most of us, both Carlos on his side and me on mine, have to focus on our project,” Vasseur added. “And I don’t know what will happen in 2027, 2028, or 2029.”

Sainz’s situation is particularly interesting as he prepares for the arrival of Hamilton at Ferrari, which will significantly change the team dynamic. While Sainz has expressed his commitment to Ferrari, the possibility of returning to the team in the later stages of his career remains a subject of conversation. For now, Sainz’s future appears uncertain, with many speculating about whether he will remain in Formula 1 with a top team or move to another team in the years to come.

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is seen as a major reshuffle in the F1 landscape, as the veteran driver’s switch from Mercedes could trigger a chain of events across the grid, with Sainz being a potential future piece in Ferrari’s long-term plans. For now, however, all eyes are on the upcoming season and how Ferrari will adjust to having both Sainz and Hamilton as teammates before the latter’s eventual retirement.
