Ferrari President Publicly “Pushing” to Sign Christian Horner, Says Statement
In a dramatic turn in the Formula 1 managerial arms race, Ferrari President John Elkann has reportedly intensified efforts to bring Christian Horner into the fold as the Scuderia’s new team principal. A statement released Thursday indicates that the Prancing Horse’s upper leadership is actively exploring a switch—despite existing contracts and club stability concerns.
According to recent reports, Elkann is “focused” on securing Horner, viewing the ex-Red Bull boss as an elite candidate to restore Ferrari’s championship credentials. While current principal Fred Vasseur recently signed a contract extension, sources suggest that his position may already be under scrutiny. Observers point to Elkann’s well-documented emotional leadership style as a factor driving willingness to rethink top-tier staffing decisions.
The push comes amid strong endorsements for Horner from inside F1 circles. Former driver Johnny Herbert named Horner Ferrari’s “prime target,” arguing that only a seasoned victor of Horner’s calibre could lead Ferrari out of its performance slump. Other insiders suggest Horner may already be in contact with several team owners around the paddock as he plots his return to the sport.
Yet, any transition would face significant obstacles. Horner departed Red Bull earlier this season under a high-value severance deal reportedly worth £80 million. Moreover, he has publicly stated that his return to F1 hinges on “skin in the game” — that is, a stake or ownership influence rather than simply an executive role.
Ferrari, meanwhile, has sought to project continuity. CEO Benedetto Vigna and other top executives used the company’s recent Capital Markets Day to emphasize a long-term improvement strategy, acknowledging the team’s F1 struggles while affirming faith in the organization’s direction. Whether that narrative will hold under internal pressure from Elkann’s ambitions remains to be seen.
