Former Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill has expressed concern over Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated move to Ferrari, suggesting the seven-time world champion may be “running out of time” to achieve success with the “fickle” Italian team.
Hamilton, 39, is set to join Ferrari in 2025 after an illustrious career with Mercedes. While his decision has generated excitement, questions remain about whether the legendary British driver will have enough time and the right machinery to chase an eighth world title.
“Ferrari is a team that hasn’t consistently delivered over the years,” Hill told Sky Sports. “They’re passionate, but also unpredictable. Lewis is an extraordinary talent, but he’s not getting any younger. The clock is ticking.”
Ferrari has not won a drivers’ championship since Kimi Räikkönen in 2007. Despite glimpses of potential in recent seasons, the Scuderia has struggled with strategic errors and inconsistent car performance. Hill warned that Hamilton could face similar frustrations unless the team evolves rapidly.
“Ferrari can be magical when it clicks, but that magic is rare,” Hill continued. “The danger is that Lewis spends the final years of his career chasing a dream that just isn’t realistic under current conditions.”
Hamilton, who last won a championship in 2020, has maintained optimism about the move, calling it a “childhood dream.” But some experts worry that sentimentality may not translate into success on track.
As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on whether Ferrari can provide Hamilton with a title-contending car—or whether his move will be remembered as a final gamble in a glittering career.
Will the Scuderia rise to the occasion—or will history repeat itself with more disappointment for the Tifosi? Only time will tell.
