Sergio Perez, the recently dismissed Formula 1 driver, has been tipped for a possible return to the sport, despite being axed by Red Bull Racing. The Mexican driver had been with the team since 2021, after moving from Racing Point (now known as Aston Martin), where he had achieved some notable performances. However, Perez’s tenure at Red Bull ended on a low note, as his performance significantly declined in the 2024 season, culminating in him being dropped from the team for 2025.
Perez had joined Red Bull to partner Max Verstappen, with hopes of contributing to the team’s efforts in securing both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. While Verstappen dominated the championship in recent years, Perez struggled to maintain consistency and competitiveness, particularly in the 2024 season. His poor form was evident throughout the year, with multiple early exits in qualifying, coupled with two consecutive retirements (DNFs) towards the end of the season. Speaking to Imagen Television Mexico, he suggested that while Perez would focus on his charitable foundation and other personal projects, a return to F1 could still be a possibility if a good opportunity came up. Antonio Perez was clear that his son had no intention of racing in any other category of motorsport at this point in his career, but if the right Formula 1 offer came along, Checo would be ready to make a comeback.
“I am sure he is going to do beautiful things through his foundation where he will unload all his energy,” said Antonio Perez. “But I am also telling you that the movie is not closed if a very good opportunity comes along for Formula 1. I am sure that Checo would take it but for any other category I am sure he would not.”
Perez’s potential return could depend on several factors, including the availability of seats in top teams and the level of interest in his experience. At 34 years old, the Mexican driver may not have the same career longevity as some of the younger stars in F1, but his experience and skillset could still be valuable for teams seeking a reliable and accomplished driver.
The likelihood of Perez returning to a top team seems low, considering Red Bull has already made their choice with Lawson, and other top teams like Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren currently have stable driver lineups. However, the possibility of Perez joining a midfield or lower-tier team is not out of the question. Perez has shown that, when at his best, he can be a formidable force, often delivering strong results in races where strategy and tire management play crucial roles.
