Rafael Nadal sent ‘almost impossible’ US Open message as former No 2 gives verdict on his future

Spanish tennis legend Alex Corretja has cast doubt on Rafael Nadal’s ability to compete in the 2024 US Open, labeling it “almost impossible” following Nadal’s participation in the Paris Olympics.

Corretja, a two-time French Open finalist, highlighted the challenge Nadal would face due to the rapid transition from the Olympics to  US Open, emphasizing the necessity of playing in Cincinnati beforehand to acclimate to the surface change.

Nadal, a veteran of the Olympic Games with appearances in Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016, competed in both singles and doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the singles event, he was defeated by Novak Djokovic, the eventual gold medalist, with a score of 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.

Nadal’s doubles campaign, alongside fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, ended in the quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to the American duo Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram after securing two prior victories.
