Former F1 team principal Eddie Jordan has opined that axing Carlos Sainz and signing Lewis Hamilton was suicidal from Ferrari. The Italian team shocked the world of motorsports when they announced that the seven-time F1 world champion would be joining them as a full-time driver from the 2025 season.
The decision caught everyone by surprise as they had a stable driver’s lineup with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, both of whom had been performing at a very high level over the past couple of years. However, the Maranello-based outfit could not pass on the opportunity to sign arguably the greatest driver in F1 history and pull off an iconic coup.
While appearing on the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan was left flabbergasted by the decision as he claimed that he asked Ferrari Chairman John Elkann about the move and the need to disrupt a settled pairing, saying:
“I say to John Elkann, who’s the chairman of that group, what the f*** was he thinking about in getting rid of Carlos when he had a very happy, friendly, structured team that knew how to work together? The drivers got on well together. Fred Vasseur had a real opportunity to bring this team great, great success.
Now he has to start thinking about gelling and mending away, that he can get a new member of the team, egos, everything involved. Lewis is a particularly nice person. However, my FFS goes to John Elkann of Ferrari for even authorising, and signing off on that deal. It was absolutely suicidal to get rid of Carlos,” Elkann added
Lewis Hamilton will be joining the Italian team on a multi-year deal and will start his tenure with them in 2025.
Alpine F1 advisor gives his take on Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari
Alpine F1 Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore stated that he too was surprised by Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari and remains unsure if it would work out.
Speaking to German magazine Bild, the Italian said:
“It will be strange to see Lewis in the Ferrari. Of course, I respect such decisions, but I also wonder whether it makes sense. Ferrari had two top drivers in Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. I don’t understand why they split up this great pairing.”
However, he mentioned that it would be good for the sport to see Lewis Hamilton driving for the iconic team and for the “television” and “ratings.”
The British driver had a celebrated career with the Mercedes F1 team, which he joined at the beginning of the 2013 season. He won six of his seven driver’s championships before ending ties at the end of 2024. On the other hand, Carlos Sainz would be joining another iconic team in Williams F1 in his bid to get them back to the front of the grid.
