Whatever Happened to Diego Laxalt?
Uruguayan World Cup left-back Diego Laxalt joined Celtic on loan from AC Milan in October 2020.
His arrival came at a crucial time for Celtic manager Neil Lennon,
who needed a new left-back after Boli Bolingoli was sent to Turkey. Bolingoli had breached Covid quarantine guidelines with a secret trip to Spain in August.
Laxalt, who was 28 years old with 24 international caps, was brought in to provide competition for Greg Taylor.
His move to Celtic came after AC Milan signed him from Genoa for £16 million in 2018.
Before his stint in Glasgow, Laxalt had also been on loan at Torino.
Despite high hopes, Laxalt failed to make a significant impact at Celtic.
Over 28 appearances, his most notable moment was a stoppage-time equalizer against Hibs in a 2-2 draw at Easter Road. Just days after joining, Laxalt made his debut in a match against Rangers at Parkhead. Unfortunately, the game ended in a 2-0 defeat, with Rangers’ Connor Goldson scoring both goals.
Laxalt’s time at Celtic coincided with a turbulent season for the club.
The team struggled and ultimately failed to secure a historic tenth successive league title. Following the disappointing campaign, Laxalt returned to Milan in the summer of 2021 and later that year moved to Dynamo Moscow on a permanent basis, with a contract running until June 2026.
